JUBA, South Sudan — President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran South Sudanese politician and elder statesman Bona Malwal Madut Ring, describing him as a “visionary leader of all time,” Monday, Nov. 4, 2025.
In a statement issued in Juba, Kiir said he was “profoundly saddened” to learn of the passing of his “beloved brother and elder statesman.” He extended condolences on behalf of the people and government of the Republic of South Sudan, as well as his family, to Malwal’s relatives, the Twic Mayardit community, and the nation.
Malwal was a veteran politician, journalist, and author who published numerous books and founded several journals and magazines that became the voice of South Sudanese people during the nation’s long struggle for liberation. His distinguished political career included service as minister of culture and information under former Sudanese President Gaafar Nimeiry, regional minister in the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region, and advisor to the Presidency of Sudan.
“Bona Malwal was a leader and visionary who sacrificed for the people of South Sudan, and he will be dearly missed,” Kiir said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time of bereavement.”
Kiir concluded his message by praying that “Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace.”
