RENK, Aug. 19, 2024 — Flooding in Upper Nile State has devastated Renk city, submerging 12 neighborhoods and displacing over 11,000 residents, according to local authorities. The floods, which struck early Friday, have caused significant property damage and left thousands in dire need of humanitarian aid.
Renk County Commissioner Akoch Jol Achiek reported Saturday that 11,711 residents were forced to flee their homes for higher ground. The Commissioner highlighted the government’s efforts to collaborate with organizations to assess the urgent needs of those affected, with a particular focus on medicine and shelter.
“We are studying several options to relocate citizens affected by the floods, including the Madakon and Goz Rom areas,” Achiek said, urging both State and National governments, along with aid organizations, to expedite the delivery of assistance.
Nyok Lul, a resident of the Al Salam neighborhood, expressed frustration over the lack of immediate action despite visits from officials and organizations. “The people are still suffering,” Lul stated, calling for long-term solutions to the recurrent floods from Khor Asher.
Similarly, Raela Stephen, from the Abayok neighborhood, appealed for urgent help as many residents are now living in the open, struggling without food, shelter, or medicine. “We are suffering,” she said, emphasizing the severe conditions faced by displaced families.
