Freedom fighter and veteran Molana Deng Anyuat called for unity during his reception in Eldoret, Kenya, where he was warmly welcomed by South Sudanese communities and family members, Sept. 25. 2025
Anyuat, a veteran lawyer who once served under the late John Garang de Mabior, was received with jubilation by his sons-in-law from Duk County and other South Sudanese congregants at the Africa Inland Church in Eldoret.
The event featured speeches emphasizing peace and unity, alongside cultural performances such as traditional dances by women from Duk County, including the well-known “Duk flower girls.”
Community and church leaders from different backgrounds in Kenya used the gathering as a reconciliatory platform, expressing their happiness at Anyuat’s recovery and presence. “Family and friends brought me to Kenya for medication,” Anyuat said, recalling his years of service to the government under Garang. He noted that more than 35 years ago, he was selected by three counties at New Site to serve as their representative.
Reflecting on Garang’s vision, Anyuat recounted: “He told people we were becoming independent, and that our duty was to solve the problems of our communities.” He reminded those present of Garang’s call to build a peaceful South Sudan through development, which he said would earn the nation respect on the global stage.
In his address, Anyuat urged the people of Jonglei State to reject division and instead work together for the unity of Twic East, Bor, and Duk counties. He criticised the culture of disunity and cautioned that it threatened future generations. “My message to the people of Eldoret is to make peace among yourselves. We have no Bor, Twic, or Duk; we are one people of Jonglei State,” he said.
Anyuat also lamented the rise of divisive practices, contrasting them with his youth. “In our time, we had no bad songs sung against one another, and relations among the three counties were strong,” he said. “The people of Jonglei State must maintain good relations and build a stronger, united community.”
