JUBA, South Sudan – Several rebel groups in South Sudan have united under a new umbrella organization to intensify their fight against the central government in Juba, declaring their mission to bring about regime change and restore peace. July 1, 2025.
The newly formed alliance, called the Coalition of South Sudan’s Opposition Movements (CSSOM), was announced by U.S.-based Gen. Dickson Gatluak Jock Nyuot, who serves as the group’s spokesman. In an exclusive interview with The JubaMirror, Gatluak said the coalition represents a unified front of political and military movements committed to “liberating South Sudan from dictatorship and oppression.”
“The leadership of CSSOM reaffirms its unwavering commitment to federal democratic principles and the inalienable right to self-determination,” Gatluak said, emphasising the group’s stance on justice, unity and the protection of civilians.
CSSOM’s formation comes amid growing discontent over continued violence, displacement and human rights violations across South Sudan. The group accuses the Juba government of intensifying crackdowns on opposition voices and failing to uphold national unity.
During the interim period, the coalition’s political and military strategies will be directed by the Coalition’s High Executive Council, according to the statement.
The South Sudanese government has not publicly responded to the formation of CSSOM. Analysts warn that increased rebel coordination could signal a new phase of conflict if diplomatic engagement does not resume.
Gatluak concluded his statement by urging the international community to recognise the CSSOM’s cause and support efforts toward a peaceful transition.
