JUBA, Sept. 17, 2025 — The People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) accused President Salva Kiir Mayardit of dismantling peace efforts and leading South Sudan into political, security and economic collapse. In a statement released this week, the coalition said the country faces its “lowest point ever” following the breakdown of the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The PCCA said Kiir’s government lost legitimacy after the arrest of opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar and dozens of senior officials, calling the actions “a de facto coup d’état.” The coalition urged the African Union and regional body IGAD to suspend South Sudan and impose targeted sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, on Kiir and his allies.

“South Sudan is engulfed in a governance vacuum, with no legitimate authority functioning at the national, state or local levels,” the statement read. The PCCA accused Kiir of obstructing democratic transition, undermining peace agreements, and consolidating one-man rule by sidelining the SPLM party and replacing elected structures with personal appointments.

The coalition also warned of renewed fighting in Upper Nile and Equatoria states, citing the collapse of transitional security arrangements. It said the deployment of foreign troops in Juba without parliamentary approval was unconstitutional and further evidence that “South Sudan’s own military has collapsed.”

On the economy, the PCCA said unpaid salaries, soaring inflation and widespread hunger reflected a complete financial breakdown. Oil revenues, it alleged, have been diverted into private accounts and fictitious contracts while ordinary South Sudanese face starvation.

“The world cannot remain silent while South Sudan descends further into lawlessness and chaos,” the coalition said, calling on the international community to withdraw recognition of Kiir’s government.
