jUBA, South Sudan — A South Sudanese lawmaker on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, filed a motion to summon Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel Akol over allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and constitutional violations.
Hon. Machok Majong Jong, who represents Kuac North constituency, presented the motion before the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, citing Article 55 of the Transitional Constitution, which gives Parliament oversight powers to summon public officials.
Majong accused the vice president and chair of the economic cluster of mismanagement and misconduct, warning that unchecked abuses could plunge the young nation into “civil strife, community warfare, gangsterism, and outright state failure.”
The motion lists 13 charges, including:
Interference in the Nasir military incident, which left thousands dead and displaced.
Hosting Ugandan troops on private land in Juba in violation of the constitution.
Border disputes in Kajo-Keji that sparked deadly clashes.
Alleged deals to host U.S. deportees and resettle Palestinians without parliamentary approval.
Running an “infrastructure cartel” accused of negligence and corruption in road projects.
Manipulation of oil revenues and diversion of public funds.
Arbitrary arrests of political and business rivals.
Fraud, money laundering, and failure to stabilize the economy.
Misuse of $15 million in public funds for a political rally in Wau.
Blocking support for the national basketball team, leading to international embarrassment.
“The vice president has become like a master tailor of invisible garments, dressing the leadership of this nation in illusions while the public sees only nakedness,” Majong told the Assembly.
The motion calls for Vice President Bol Mel to appear before lawmakers in a special session to address the allegations. The Assembly has not yet announced when the hearing will take place.
