UNISFA agrees to leave Aweil within 72 hours

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has agreed to depart from areas of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State after they were given 72 hours by protestors who have been ‘peacefully’ demonstrating since Thursday.

Today, the second peaceful protest took place in Kak Abar, an area located in Aweil East county along the border between South Sudan and Sudan.

The protest spearheaded by youths group, civil society Alliance, farmers union, traditional chiefs, women and teachers was aimed at evicting UNISFA from the area.

According to placards, banners and other written materials the protestors say “UNISFA is only for Abyei not for Aweil”

Others protestors also argued that “Aweil is not Contested area like Abyei where UNISFA is established for protection mandate’s purposes”

The protestors gave UNISFA only 72 hours to immediately evacuate the areas of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

Captian Abraham systeraz from UNISFA in War Abar said they will all leave the site within 72 hours.
He appreciated the youth and other group for peaceful protest.
