Three people killed in Kampala’s terror attack

Three Ugandan civilians have died in a midday terror attack that happened in the country’s capital, Kampala, on Tuesday morning.

The attack took place at around 10.00 am and involved twin heavy blasts that caused a lot of panic in Kampala’s Central Business District. According to Uganda’s Daily Monitor, the attacks took place at Raj Chambers and Jubilee Insurance along Parliamentary Avenue.
Uganda’s Commissioner of Police, Fred Enanga, told the media that the terror attack was perpetrated by three suicide bombers who died instantly after detonating the devices. Three civilians also died, while 33 others were injured.

“The first attack occurred near the checkpoint of the Central Police Station, in Kampala at around 10.03 am. The fresh footage on CCTV clearly indicates how a male adult, putting on a black jacket and carrying a backpack, detonated himself. He died instantly, and the spillover effect caused additional injuries to police officers and other civilians who were within a radius of 30 metres.

“Two other people have been confirmed dead, while 17 others have sustained injuries. Those injured were within the section covering the point of impact and the front desk area at the Central Police Station, ” Enanga was quoted as saying by the Daily Monitor.

He revealed that the bombers were disguised as Boda Boda riders and gained access to the target areas before detonating the devices. He also said that a fourth attacker who escaped the blast was pursued and killed by the police officers.

“Two suicide bombers were clearly captured, on motorcycles, disguising themselves as Boda Boda riders. They detonated the bombs they were carrying on themselves, and that killed them instantly, ” he added.

“Although three suicide bombers died in the double bomb attacks, our CT response teams managed to pursue a fourth suicide bomber and intercept him at Bwaise. They shot and injured him, and immediately after, recovered an unexploded improvised explosive device at Nansana-Katooke, at his home, which the bomb squad, were going to neutralize. We are now pursuing other members of the terror groups, ” Enanga revealed.

Kampala has lately hit the headlines due to the terror attacks that have mushroomed in the city in the past month.
