SSPDF, SPLA-IO clash in Maiwut, southern Unity

JUBA – South Sudan’s main peace signatories, the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), have clashed in at least two areas in both Upper Nile and Unity states, according to SPLA-IO spokesman Col. Lam Paul Gabriel.

The opposition media official said in a statement on Sunday that clashes occurred at Wang Kuarbiy, which is under the control of the SPLA-IO, after elements belonging to the SSPDF left their trenches at Turow in Maiwut County to attack the SPLA-IO position, leaving one opposition soldier dead.

“Today afternoon at about 4:00PM, the SSPDF force left its trenches in Turow and attack the SPLA-IO base of Wang Kuarbiy around Pagak killing one SPLA-IO soldier,” he said, adding that the attacking SSPDF soldiers were later on “repulsed to their base.”

In Unity state, Lam said a force led by Koch County Commissioner attacked SPLA-IO forces at Mirmir Cantonment site on Saturday in what he said was a violation of the Cessation of Hostility Agreement signed in 2017, and said the SPLA-IO forces repulsed the attack.

“Secondly, yesterday the 8/01/2022, the SPLA-IO cantonment site of Mirmir in Unity State came under an aggressive attack from IG forces under the command of Koch County commissioner in complete intentional violation of CoHA signed on 21/12/2017,” he said, adding that “The aggressors were also repulsed.”

Col. Lam did not cite if there were any casualties.

He further said the main armed opposition group which is a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement signed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny urges the peace monitors “to investigate these intentional violations and bring those responsible to book.”
