Main armed opposition official accuses unnamed individuals of working to stain relations between the SPLM/A-IO and Ethiopia.

South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLA-IO, has denounced reports suggesting that some members of the Ethiopian rebels have defected to team up with it.

Over the pass week, a letter has been circulating on social media purported to have been written by the SPLA-IO sector four (4) commander General Khor Chuol informing other SPLA-IO bases that two senior commanders of Ethiopian rebels have joined the group.

In a statement this afternoon, Colonel Lam Paul Gabriel, the SPLA-IO deputy spokesman and press secretary for South Sudan’s defense minister, denied the reports and accused unnamed people of working to stain relations between the main armed opposition group and Ethiopia.

“The SPLA-IO sighted with concern a document trending social media, alleged to have been written by Sector Four(4) Deputy Commander; Maj. Gen. Khor Chuol Giet on 03/02/2021. It is alleged in the document that some officials from the Ethiopian Unity Patriot Army (EUPA) defected to the SPLA-IO,” Lam said in the statement extended to Sudans Post.

“This is a complete fabrication meant to jeopardize the diplomatic relationship the SPLA-IO has with the Ethiopian Government. The SPLA-IO has no link to the EUPA and did not receive any of its officials in any of the SPLA-IO cantonment or assembly areas,” it added.

The statement further stressed that “The SPLA-IO respects the integrity of Ethiopia and also the support of the government of Ethiopia towards the Implementation of the R-ARCSS.
