SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN JUBA DEMAND RESUMPTION OF LEARNING

Public secondary school students in Juba on Tuesday staged a peaceful march protesting the suspension of classes following the ongoing teachers’ strike.

The students who were seen carrying placards initialed ‘education is our right’ demanded the resumption of studies.

In early January, teachers in Central Equatoria State laid down their tools after demanding the state education ministry failed to pay their salaries and allowances in line with increments directed by President Salva Kiir.

Students from more than 10 secondary schools participated in the march in front of the state ministry of education and instruction.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Emmanuel Sule said, “We have come to express our challenges as students after the indefinite suspension of studies. We are calling on the authorities to find urgent solutions to the issue so that we return to class as soon as possible.”

The state education minister Cirisio Zakaria Lado assured the students that the standoff would soon be resolved.
