Residents call on Central Equatoria State governor to look into circumstances behind arrest of activists and a Bishop in Yei
As Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony visits Yei River County for two days, residents are asking him to find out circumstances that led to the arrest of a civil society activist, Justoson Victor Yuasa and an Evangelical Presbyterian Church Bishop, Jackson Yemba Antipas.
The detained who are yet to appear before court are facing charges of treason and gathering crowds with an intent to disrupt peace.
Bishop Yemba’s brother, Robert Guya Antipas was also arrested on Friday morning while delivering breakfast to the detainees.
According to reports Justoson Victor was arrested on Wednesday, 25 August at 8PM while he was returning from a daily evening devotion.
The Bishop was apprehended in his home in the following morning of Thursday, 26 August 2021.
They’re being accused of ‘holding a meeting at night’ ahead of the earlier 30th August demonstration by the People’s Coalition for Civil Action.
The South Sudan Civil Society Forum expresses concern of the rapidly shrinking civic space for activists; compounded by incitement attributed to leaders who are supposed to protect the citizens.
They had demanded for the unconditional release or their arraignment in a competent court of law within the required time.
