President Kiir commits to leading the country to credible elections

President Salva Kiir has affirmed government’s commitment to leading the country to credible and fair elections. The President made the comments when launching the official workshop to kick off the constitution making process that will lead the country to planned elections in 2023. Addressing representatives of the parties, stakeholders, the donor community, regional and international partners, President Kiir said the making of the constitution should be an inclusive process.

The 3-day workshop is organized by R-JMEC and facilitated by the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and Rule of Law, a Germany-based institute renowned internationally for constitution-making.

Speaking at the event, IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan urged the revitalized government to include the opinions of the displaced population and refugees in the constitution making process. Ismail Wais says it is important to pursue an inclusive process, to ensure legitimacy and get public acceptance of the end-product.

The UN Special Representative, Nicholas Haysom similarly encouraged an inclusive process and said the United Nations stands ready to offer support.

The workshop continues today with representatives of the parties and stakeholders retreating to closed-door meetings on substantive issues.
