Police beat faithfuls celebrating Easter at St. Theresa Cathedral in Kator
Despite the beating of some faithfuls this morning by security apparatus citing lockdown violations, prayers at the church went on smoothly. The security men who tried to close Saint Theresa Cathedral Parish Kator, Juba said they were sent to meet the Parish Priest to explain why the Church was open while the country is still under partial lockdown.
The Covid-19 Taskforce committee in the country re-introduced the partial lockdown on March 3 with a document outlining charges on violators after serious increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country. Since then there was no timely communication regarding lifting or extension of the lockdown in South Sudan.
According to the document, the lockdown was supposed to run from March 3 to April 3 and the same body responsible (Covid-19 Taskforce Committee) was to either lift it or reimpose it but this information was not passed to the public on time as expected.
