John Akech Agau faces dismissal from the University amid child marriage concerns

Activists in Juba claim they have requested that John Akech Agau, a finalist student pursuing Public Administration and Management, have his Bachelor’s Degree study program revoked since he has married a child.

Following their marriage in Yirol West County of Lakes State, photos of 31-year-old John Akech Agau and his new wife, a small girl who appeared to be no more than 15 years old, went viral on Friday.

“We have reported him to the Dean, who will revoke his Bachelor’s degree. We’re hurt because we can’t believe this was done by a university student,” an activist told Talk of Juba.

He went on to say that they want Akech’s studies at Kampala University Juba to be revoked in order to send a message to institutions about the need of grooming better individuals. Institutions, he believes, should include consequences for offenders of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), such as child marriage.

John Akech, whose narrative has sparked outrage on social media, has declined to comment on the situation.
