Two serious road ambushes occurred along Mangalla-Juba road few days following an official declaration of Mangalla Payam as an Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) Camp:
The first incident was on 25th/9/2020 in which a civilian vehicle traveling from Mangalla to Juba was randomly shot at, injuring one passenger (a Chief).
The second transpired on 28th/9/2020 when yet another passenger vehicle traveling from Juba to Mangalla was ambushed. One teenager girl was kidnapped and murdered in the bushes, two other teenagers and a Driver sustained serious injuries. The attackers in these unfortunate incidences remains unknown.
These two gruesome incidences against the innocent people are rationalizing my worries with regards to resettlement in Mangalla. They need assistance and care accorded to them unconditionally by the Government, Humanitarian Organisations, host community and their neighbors. They don’t have with them cattle and any such resource that may be deemed a source of insecurity, so, who is targeting the camp and why?
Too, declaring Mangalla as an IDP camp and providing humanitarian aid is not enough. The IDPs must be protected and thus, the National & state Governments and United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) must take note and quickly respond to their growing needs including the recent road ambushes.
All in all, I am equally startled by the incidences. The concerned authorities must therefore, swiftly respond and take charge of the IDPs’ safety as well as the roads leading to the Camp so as to allow safe entry into the camp and also to avoid retaliation by the IDPs.
