Health workers to stage 2-day strike next week, demand justice for Dr. Louis

The chairperson of the South Sudan Health Professionals Committee, Dr. Anthony Garang has announced that all health workers in public institutions will go on a partial go-slow next week, as they demand justice for the murder of one of their colleagues.

The Late Dr. Louis Edward Saleh Ufew, an employee of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) was found dead in Panyijiar County of Unity State on May 21, 2021.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Dr. Garang says the partial strike will take place on 14 June 2021 and 15 June 2021 to compel authorities to act and deter further murders.

“The main reason is that we want justice for the killing of our colleague in Unity State. We have been waiting for the authorities to arrest the culprits to face justice but until now nothing has happened,” he lamented.

He adds, “We are saying that this could happen again to any colleagues in different places. So we want the authorities to do something so that it does not repeat. At least arrest those who killed our colleagues and also give us protection as we continue to do our jobs in different parts of the country.”

Garang says the health professionals body has been in constant communication with the state authorities but no developments have been made in the case.

According to him, “The emergency department, maternity, and inpatient departments will be operational for the two days but patients in the outpatient departments and referrals will not be attended to.”

Dr. Garang says the body is recording increasing numbers of attacks on health workers in the country, with at least three reported murders in the last month alone.
