First Vice President Dr. Machar eulogizes Late. Anyanya Veteran Gordon Koang Chuol for his role in liberation struggles

Khartoum, South Sudan

 

January 9, 2022—A veteran General of Anyanya I and SPLA, Lt. Gen. Gordon Koang Chuol Kulang has passed on this week after a long illness.

 

According to relatives, Gen. Gordon Koang passed on at 6pm on Thursday, January 6th in the Sudanese capital after a long illness.

“Gen. Gordon Koang Chuol Kulang has passed on at 6:00PM Thursday the 6th of January 2022 in Khartoum after long illness. His body will be laid to rest in Nasir, Upper Nile State”,the statement of condolences read.

In a condolence message by the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny describes Gen. Koang as a veteran who dedicated his precious time to liberation struggles from first Anyanya upto SPLA/SPLM in 1983.

“Gen. Gordon Koang Chuol Kulang was a veteran who devoted his entire life to liberation of South Sudan as from Anyanya and SPLM/SPLA armed struggle”,Dr. Machar says in a condolences statement obtained by Nyamilepedia.

 

Gen. Koang Chuol initiallly fought the SPLM/A from 1983 to 1988; however, when he joined the SPLM/A in 1988 he was admitted to the highest military ranks known as the SPLA/M Political Military High Command until he split again in 1991.

“Gen. Koang Chuol was a member of SPLA/SPLM Political Military High Command and a top member of Nasir Declaration, which resulted to the split of SPLA/SPLM in 1991”,he added.

Machar reiterates that the Nasir Declaration raised three issues namely the Right of Self-Determination for people of South Sudan, Democracy and Respect of Human Rights in SPLA/SPLM.

“The legacy of General Gordon Koang Chuol Kulang is in these ideals which culminated to Independence and Sovereignty of this country”, First Vice President Machar further emphasized.

Dr. Machar expresses his sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and relatives of South Sudanese in general for the demise of the longest served Anyanya veteran.

“On behalf of the SPLA/SPLM-IO and on my own behalf and family, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the family, relatives, friends and the entire people of South Sudan for this loss”, he said.

Gen. Gordon Koang Chuol was one of the trio, who spearheaded Nasir Declaration in 1991 advocating for Self-Determination . It was him, Dr. Riek Machar and Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin who vowed to shake the status quo within SPLA/SPLM under late. Dr. John Garang De Mabior.
