South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, is reported to have been denied a passport application, according to a senior opposition official who preferred not to be named due to the sensitive nature of the issue.

“He’s still being denied a passport application by the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration at the direction of the President,” the source said in an exclusive interview with local media.
Since last year, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan has urged the government to restore Machar’s national passport, an important document that could allow him to move freely in the country, however the calls were not taken into account.
Earlier this year, South Sudan’s government and opposition parties formed a coalition government, a positive step that raised hopes and heralded the end of a six-year civil war that has claimed the lives of thousands of people.
The circumstances that led to the government’s reluctance to issue passports to opposition officials remain unclear, and the president’s office was not immediately available for comment.
