The attack occurred around 4 p.m. after traders traveling by boat from Unity State to Juba City were given an escort by Yirol East County leadership upon entering Lakes State. A lone gunman reportedly overpowered the escorting police officer and began firing indiscriminately at the group in Babthok.
Survivors said the traders dispersed and fled into nearby swam plan. Authorities confirmed four deaths, with 42 people accounted for and safely returned to Unity State. One woman and a boat remain under the custody of Shambek Port officials.
The Unity State government condemned the attack and alleged that the perpetrators are youths from neighboring Lakes State. Officials called on Lakes State authorities to apprehend those responsible and ensure justice is served to prevent future violence.
“We appeal to the citizens of Unity State especially the youth and families of the victims to remain calm and refrain from retaliation,” the statement read. “Let the law take its course without interference or acts of revenge.”
Unity State officials reiterated their commitment to peace, reconciliation, and intergovernmental cooperation to address the region’s underlying tensions. The government called on all South Sudanese communities to promote unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
