Renowned South Sudanese journalist Deng Monychol was violently attacked on Friday evening by a gang of over ten armed youths in the Shirikat area of Juba.
The attackers, armed with pangas (machetes), struck Monychol on the head, leaving him with a deep wound before robbing him of his smartphone and tablet.
“On Friday evening at around 6:50 P.M., I was violently attacked by a group of more than ten gang members while on my way home. During the assault, they struck me with a panga, causing a deep cut to my head. In addition to the physical violence, they stole my tablet and smartphone,” Monychol said.
He was rushed to hospital and is now recovering, though he described the trauma as “overwhelming.”
“By God’s grace, I survived — but the pain and trauma remain overwhelming,” he added.
The Union of Journalists of South Sudan has condemned the attack and urged the police to swiftly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.
