RUMBEK, South Sudan — Daniel Lat Kon, state coordinator for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization in Lakes state, condemned recent deadly attacks in Yirol East and Amongpiny, calling for urgent government intervention and heightened community vigilance, June 18.
In an exclusive interview with The Juba Mirror, Lat said armed youth. suspected to be from the Nuer community carried out separate attacks in Yirol East County and Amongpiny Payam, resulting in multiple deaths. He warned that similar attacks may occur in Rumbek North, citing reports of armed groups moving toward the area.
“This is the second or third time such attacks have taken place in these areas,” Lat said. “Government forces were reportedly killed or injured during clashes. The government needs to deploy additional troops to prevent further violence.”
Daniel Lat urged communities in conflict-prone areas to remain vigilant and take steps to protect their lives and property. He also called on Nuer residents in Mayendit and Payinjiar to promote peace and communicate with neighboring communities in Lakes state.
“These attacks must not be seen as representing the entire Nuer community,” he said. “They are the actions of individuals, and if left unchecked, they will jeopardize inter-state relations.”
Lat suggested that political groups in the country may be influencing the violence and emphasized the need for nationwide condemnation.
“The business communities in Payinjiar and Mayendit must stand for peace so that relations with Lakes state can continue, especially in Yirol East, Rumbek North, and Amongpiny,” he said.
