In a shocking development at a Security meeting held on Monday, Vice President Bol Mel and Director General Gen. Ciec were involved in a physical altercation after a dispute over orders to arrest First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar. The disagreement occurred when Gen. Ciec refused to comply with the directive to detain Dr. Machar, citing concerns over the legality and authority behind the order.
Gen. Ciec reportedly told Vice President Bol, “You cannot order me to arrest the the First Vice President of the country. Such an act would amount to a clear coup. The order to arrest First Vice Dr. Riek should come directly from President Kiir, not from you, as Dr. Riek holds a senior position than you.” In response to these remarks, Vice President Bol, visibly agitated, attempted to physically confront Gen. Ciec. However, Gen. Ciec quickly defended himself, and the two exchanged blows.
Following the altercation, Vice President Bol Mel convened a meeting with the organized forces and other security personnel, where he allegedly blocked Gen. Ciec from attending. The incident has raised serious questions about the growing tensions within the South Sudan leadership and the potential implications for national security.
This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing power struggle within the government, with concerns about its potential impact on the stability of the country. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
