The situation in Nasir and areas in Upper Nile is deeply concerning, and it is imperative for the government of South Sudan to respond to the allegations of chemical weapon usage during the recent military operations. The lack of transparency and communication on this matter has led to speculation and mistrust among the public, which is damaging to the country’s image and reputation internationally. As the Patriotic People’s Party (PPP), we urge the government to take immediate action to address this issue and assure the citizens that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.
To effectively respond to the situation in Nasir and Upper Nile, the government of South Sudan should:
1. Conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations of chemical weapon usage and publicly disclose the findings to the citizens and the international community.
2. Hold those responsible for any violations of international humanitarian law and human rights accountable, including individuals within the military and government who may have been involved in ordering or committing such acts.
3. Ensure access to humanitarian aid and assistance for the affected population in Nasir and surrounding areas, including medical care for those who may have been exposed to harmful chemicals.
4. Engage with international organizations and independent bodies to verify the use of chemical weapons and seek assistance in addressing the humanitarian needs of the affected population.
5. Implement measures to prevent future atrocities and violations of human rights, including strict oversight and accountability mechanisms within the military and security forces.
It is crucial for the government to take prompt and decisive action to address the allegations of chemical weapon usage in Nasir and Upper Nile, in order to uphold the rule of law, protect civilians, and restore trust and confidence in the leadership of South Sudan. We call upon the Information Minister and Spokesperson of the SSPDF to provide clear and transparent communication on this matter to ensure accountability and justice for all.
