JUBA – Civil servants at the national level began receiving their salaries on Friday, March 21, barely three days before the promised date, “24-28”, fulfilling a promise made by Vice President for Economic Cluster Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel.
The well-timed payment has eased some trepidations among government employees who had been sceptical about whether the pledge would be honoured or if it would turn out to be another unfulfilled political promise.
Despite the development, questions remain about the sustainability of the initiative. Many wonder whether the payments will now be consistent or if this was just a one-time event.
“We have received the salary three days before the promised date. It is good, but we do not know whether it’s going to continue,” a civil servant told Juba Eye.
The concerned ministries – public service and HRD as well as finance and planning – have yet to clarify whether this marks the commencement of a consistent payment schedule for public servants.
