Juba, February 11, 2025 – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has revoked the National Security promotions that were announced on February 7, 2025, with immediate effect.
The decision comes after Gen. Akech Tong Aleu defied a direct presidential directive to hold off on the promotions until the President’s return from the UAE. Instead, Gen. Akech allegedly created his own list of promotions, sidelining the original list that had been submitted to President Kiir for approval.
Furthermore, the President had directed Gen. Akech to draft an inclusive list for the deployment of National Security attachés to the oil sector. However, sources indicate that Gen. Akech ignored this order and instead removed all existing National Security officers in the oil sector, replacing them with members of his own clan. These new appointees were reportedly instructed to crack down on perceived loyalists of Gen. Akol Koor Kuc, starting with their removal from key oil sector responsibilities, including DPOC, GPOC, and SPOC.
The situation has led to a total collapse of National Security operations, with officers running out of food and essential supplies. Previously, under Gen. Akol Koor, the service maintained strong relations with businesspeople who provided food and non-food items without conditions. Since Gen. Akech’s appointment, these supplies have been halted, leading to severe logistical challenges.
Additionally, SUDDS operating company has gone four months without salaries, with sources alleging that Gen. Akech diverted the funds meant for salary payments and social insurance, which was supposed to be disbursed in December.
The President’s decision to revoke the promotions comes amid growing frustration over Gen. Akech’s leadership, with insiders warning that the National Security Service is in turmoil, and urgent intervention is needed to restore stability.
