Talks between South Sudan government and the Opposition groups of the Tumaini Initiative in Nairobi have been adjourned again after the mediators recommended what they called the three priority areas that needed to be implemented to allow the country transition to stability.
In a communique dated 8th February 2025, the mediators told the negotiating parties to work towards the reunification of the forces and security sector reforms, the permanent constitution making process and the timely conduct of the free, fair, and transplant elections.
“Given the acute human insecurity and humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, the Mediation believes that actions must be taken for there to be effective mechanisms of implementation’ said the communique from the mediators.
The mediation team led by the Kenyan government and backed by the San’Egideo see the three priority areas of unification of the army, security sector reforms and elections as of critical importance necessary to ending the perpetual transition in South Sudan, and to ushering in a new dispensation.
Following the proposal from the mediators, the government team requested for adjournment of the negotiations.
The Tumaini Talks between the Hold-out groups and government that first began in May 2024 after they were moved to Kenya developed eight protocols agreed by the Parties and Stakeholders that include: Trust and Confidence Building, Permanent Ceasefire, Security Arrangements and Reforms, Humanitarian Access and Support, Communal Conflicts, Armed Civilians, and Land Disputes, Economic Recovery, Resources, and Financial Management Reforms, Justice Sector Reform, Transitional Justice and Accountability, Permanent Constitution Making Process, and Guarantors but only the Protocol on Responsibility Sharing was outstanding.
