In a significant development, four political parties have united to form the United People’s Alliance (UPA) in an effort to challenge the current regime in Juba. A statement obtained by The Jubamirror News Desk outlines the coalition of opposition forces participating in sustained negotiations for peace with the government of the Republic of South Sudan under the Tumaini Initiative, facilitated by the government of the Republic of Kenya.
The South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA) comprises the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (Real SPLM), South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A), South Sudan United National Alliance (SSUNA), South Sudan People’s Movement/Army (SSPM/A), National Peoples Movement (NPM), Upper Nile People Liberation Front (UNPLF), and the National Salvation Front – Revolutionary Command Council (NAS-RCC).
The formation of the UPA is marked on the historic date of January 9, 2025, commemorating the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 and the exercise of self-determination that led to South Sudan’s independence on July 9, 2011.
In their statement, the UPA called upon all South Sudanese citizens, opposition parties, and stakeholders to join forces and amplify the struggle for peace and good governance. They emphasized the urgency of addressing the immense suffering and political instability plaguing the nation, which they attribute to the failures of the current leadership.
“Our motherland is in danger of disintegration, collapsing into chaos and disorder due to leadership failures,” the statement reads. The UPA highlighted the crises afflicting the nation, including widespread hunger and disease, while the regime in Juba remains indifferent to the plight of its people.
The coalition aims to forge a united, peaceful, just, and prosperous South Sudan where all citizens, regardless of clan, tribe, region, religion, or gender, can thrive. The UPA aspires to create a homeland where all South Sudanese can live in harmony and dignity.
after theJubamirror contacted the Spokesperson of SSPM/A Bush Akech Chol to understand why the opposition parties to the Tumaini initiative formed an alliance in the middle of the talks, he said, the move is to consolidate the unity of all opposition parties as we continued in a sustained dialogue with the R-TGONU.
