December 25, 2024 – JUBA CITY. The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani, has acknowledged the persistent struggles facing the region, including insecurity, economic challenges, and health crises, despite relative peace following years of conflict.
In his Christmas message, Governor Jadalla highlighted the challenges undermining the festive spirit in the state.
“Although this year’s Christmas will be celebrated under relative peace as the country recovers from the effects of the conflict, Central Equatoria State still faces challenges, including insecurity caused by hold-up groups, land issues, communal violence, economic hardship, displacement, and cattle-related challenges,” he said.
Addressing Insecurity and Health Concerns
The governor emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing these issues but stressed the importance of unity and collaboration. He expressed particular concern over the rising cholera outbreak in Juba and other affected areas, including Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites.
To combat the outbreak, the state has established a Cholera Outbreak Response Oversight High-Level Committee, led by the deputy governor, to implement preventive and treatment measures. Governor Jadalla urged citizens to adhere to health guidelines, including proper hygiene and safe water practices.
“To safeguard the lives of our people, the government strongly urges the public to strictly adhere to health guidelines issued by the National Ministry of Health,” he added.
Tumaini Peace Initiative and Optimism for 2025 Governor Jadalla expressed hope for the resumption of the Tumaini Peace Initiative in Kenya, aiming to engage hold-out groups and foster reconciliation.
“We look forward to a new year filled with sustainable peace, healing, forgiveness, justice, and reconciliation,” he stated, encouraging citizens to reflect and renew their determination during the Christmas season.
Citizens Voice Concerns Despite the optimistic message, many residents shared their struggles.
Peter, a civil servant and father of four, has not received a salary in 12 months. “The major challenge I face is the lack of food for my children. Every day is a battle just to survive,” he said. Mary Luka, a Juba resident, highlighted the economic difficulties:
“We can barely afford food, let alone celebrate Christmas. The challenges are overwhelming, and the government must act fast to help us.”
Call for Unity and Action
As citizens grapple with insecurity, economic hardship, and limited access to services, the governor’s message of hope and resilience serves as a reminder of the need for collective efforts to overcome the challenges and move towards a brighter future.
Merry Christmas to all in Central Equatoria State, with hopes for a prosperous and peaceful 2025.
