JUBA, Thursday, Dec. 14, 2024 — South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit directed the new Chief of Defence Forces, Dr. Paul Nang Majok, to prioritize professionalism and integrity in leading the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF). Kiir emphasized these values as crucial for public trust and the nation’s territorial safety.
The announcement came during a power transition ceremony at Military Headquarters in Bilpham, where former Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Santino Deng Wol formally handed over leadership to Majok.
Kiir urged the SSPDF to maintain positive relations with civilians and avoid misconduct such as land grabbing and political involvement. “We will not allow anybody in uniform to engage in politics because you have a different role to play in the country,” Kiir said. “To members of the military and other organized forces, from today onward, you must refrain from engaging in dirty politics.”
He further instructed the SSPDF to focus on clearing illegal checkpoints along major highways to ensure the free movement of goods and services across South Sudan.
Majok, in his acceptance speech, pledged to modernize the army and implement Kiir’s directives. He also promised to prioritize soldiers’ welfare by ensuring they have access to modern equipment and technology.
The SSPDF, under Gen. Santino’s leadership, played a key role in restoring peace and stability to the country. Majok is expected to bring fresh ideas to the role, ensuring continuity in South Sudan’s military leadership.
