JUBA, Dec. 13 — Condolences are pouring in across South Sudan following the death of Maker Thiong Maal, a member of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly representing Bor County and a former governor of the now-defunct Jonglei State. He passed away Wednesday morning at Juba’s Gudele Hospital, where he had been admitted for high blood pressure, according to family members and a government official.
Jonglei State Peace Building Minister Malual Gabriel Kon, currently the acting governor, described Maker as a dedicated leader. “The passing of Maker Thiong Maal is a great loss for Jonglei State and the entire nation. We will remember him for his dedication and service,” Kon said in a condolence message. He added that the Jonglei State flag would fly at half-mast for three days in his honor.
Paramount Chief Sultan Malaak Ayuen-Maweer of Bor County praised Maker as a hero of South Sudan’s liberation struggle. “Maker Thiong Maal was a true patriot and a hero of our liberation. His contributions to our independence and his dedicated service in various capacities will never be forgotten,” Ayuen-Maweer said. “His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”
Maker served as Jonglei State governor in 2019 and represented Bor County in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly. He also held roles in the old Sudan government. While his exact age has not been confirmed, Maker was believed to be in his 70s.
