JUBA, Dec. 6, 2024 — Gabriel Changson Chang, South Sudan’s minister for higher education and chairperson of the Federal Democratic Party (FDP), expelled 13 party members on Wednesday after their defection to a rival faction led by Changkuoth Bichiok Reth, the party’s former secretary general.
The expulsions came after Bichiok declared himself interim party chairperson on Nov. 28, following Changson’s earlier removal of Bichiok from his post on Nov. 3. Loyalists accused Bichiok of insubordination and sowing discord within the party, prompting the move.
A letter from Changson on Wednesday cited Article 15 (2) of the FDP constitution as the basis for terminating the defectors’ membership, emphasizing the need to maintain discipline and unity within the party. “While the party appreciates the past contributions of the dismissed members, it cannot tolerate actions that undermine its objectives and unity,” Changson stated.
Among those expelled were prominent members, including Hon. William Obany, Hon. Suzan John Jock, and Hon. Chabur Goc. Changson reaffirmed the FDP’s commitment to integrity and its mission to serve South Sudan with “dedication and honesty.”
The political rift underscores ongoing power struggles within South Sudan’s opposition as the country works to stabilize its volatile political landscape.
