JUBA – Former National Security Service (NSS) chief General Akol Koor Kuc avoided arrest following a standoff at his residence in Juba’s Thongpiny neighborhood on Friday, despite heavy gunfire leaving three of his bodyguards wounded. Security sources confirmed Akol remains at his residence, dismissing rumors of his injury or detention.
A relative of the ex-intelligence chief clarified his status: “The reports claiming General Akol was wounded or killed are false. He is in good health and has not been taken anywhere. However, three of his bodyguards were injured during the incident.”
The confrontation reportedly began when SSPDF Chief of Intelligence General Marshall Stephen delivered a letter from Chief of Defense Forces General Santino Deng Wol, demanding Akol surrender alleged tanks and weapons and submit to detention.
While Akol’s camp denied possession of tanks, they confirmed holding four pickup vehicles and noted most of his arms had already been confiscated upon his return to Juba.
A high-level security meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit was planned for later Friday to address the crisis, with SSPDF spokesman Lul Ruai Koang set to provide updates. A security source at Bilpam confirmed that Akol had not been detained or relocated.
Tensions remain high following Akol’s removal from the NSS on October 2, 2024, while he was abroad in the UAE. He was appointed and subsequently dismissed as governor of Warrap State the same day he returned to Juba. Family sources said Akol has been angered by the developments, and community elders have intervened to mediate, with Akol requesting to retain personal security assurances.
General Santino Deng Wol temporarily suspended the arrest operation, ordering forces to withdraw, as the government seeks to de-escalate the situation.
