JUBA, South Sudan, Nov. 22 – Hon. Bec George Anyak, the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, pledged to work collaboratively to address South Sudan’s economic challenges during his inaugural address on Wednesday. Expressing gratitude for the confidence shown by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Anyak vowed to lead efforts in implementing strategic fiscal and monetary policies to stabilize and diversify the economy.
“Our nation is at a critical juncture where the decisions we make and the actions we take will profoundly impact South Sudan’s future. This responsibility, shared among us, demands determination and sensitivity to our people’s needs,” Anyak stated.
Highlighting the pivotal role of data in economic planning, he urged the National Bureau of Statistics to enhance its efforts in collecting and providing accurate statistics, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence for better decision-making.
The Deputy Minister also stressed the urgency of diversifying the economy beyond its heavy reliance on oil revenues, which constitute 98% of national income. He called for investments in agriculture, mining, and tourism, while noting that instability in neighboring Sudan has heightened the risks of reliance on oil.
“Without economic diversification, we remain vulnerable to external market shocks. As peace returns to Sudan, we must prepare to strengthen our oil market while developing other sustainable revenue sources,” he said.
Anyak praised ongoing reforms in public financial management and accountability within the Ministry, vowing to build on these achievements to achieve the goals of Chapter 4 of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
With a message of unity and purpose, Anyak concluded, “Let us continue to work with determination, integrity, and a shared sense of purpose to create a robust and resilient economy that supports the aspirations of every South Sudanese.”
