NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept. 10, 2024 — Stakeholders in the Tumaini Initiative have made significant progress in their efforts to resolve the conflict in South Sudan. The Tumaini Consensus, launched on May 3, 2024, in Nairobi, aims to bridge divides between the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU), the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA), and other opposition groups to establish lasting peace in the Republic of South Sudan.
The initiative builds on the achievements and challenges of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS). It seeks to expedite the implementation of ongoing and pending tasks under the R-ARCSS and introduce new programs designed to create a stable, just, and prosperous South Sudan.
The Tumaini Initiative’s Stakeholders represent a diverse coalition of South Sudanese delegates, including youth, civil society, women, faith-based groups, academia, and persons with special needs. Since May, these stakeholders have actively participated in high-level mediation efforts in Nairobi to ensure that any peace agreement reflects the needs and aspirations of the South Sudanese people.
One of the significant developments was the release of Hon. Kalisto Ladu, the former Mayor of Juba City, who had been detained for nearly six months. His release on Sept. 6, 2024, followed an appeal from the stakeholders during a meeting with President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Aug. 27, 2024. The stakeholders have welcomed this gesture and continue to urge for further actions to build trust and confidence in the peace process.
As the Tumaini Initiative progresses, the stakeholders have outlined key activities for September 2024, including consultations in Juba, confidence-building visits, and Stakeholders and Tumaini Initiative weekly updates in Nairobi

The initiative’s success, however, will depend on the political will and commitment of all involved parties, regional and international partners, and the continued support of the South Sudanese people.
The Tumaini Initiative focuses on two main pillars: the Constitution-Making Process and Democratic Elections. The stakeholders have committed to further consultations to ensure these pillars are designed and implemented in alignment with the views of the South Sudanese citizens, as they work towards a peaceful and democratic future for the nation.
