JUBA, South Sudan—Kalisto Lado, the former Juba City mayor, expressed his gratitude to President Salva Kiir following his release from detention after five months in the National Security Service’s Blue House facility. In a short video clip, Lado shared his feelings of frustration during his detention and called for unity among South Sudanese citizens.
“I want to tell everyone who doesn’t believe in God to know that God exists,” Lado said, assuring his family that he remains strong. He emphasized that his entry into politics was not for personal gain but to fight for people’s rights. “I’m a lawyer; I can work and provide for my family. I didn’t join politics for financial reasons.”
Lado called for nationalism and unity, stating, “South Sudan belongs to all of us, and we must stand together.” He also acknowledged President Kiir’s leadership, expressing appreciation for his release. “My health is not well, but God will bless South Sudan,” he added.
Lado was released without charges having spent months in detention. He revealed that just days before his release, he doubted he would survive but credited his faith for keeping him strong. He urged all citizens to embrace nationalism.
