JUBA – Family and friends of former Juba City Mayor Kalisto Lado gathered in celebration Friday evening following his release from the National Security Service (NSS) detention center in Juba. Lado had been held for more than five months under unclear circumstances, prompting widespread concern and social media rumors regarding his wellbeing.
His return brought relief and joy to those close to him, who had feared the worst after unverified reports suggested that Lado had died while in custody. The celebration was marked by emotional reunions and expressions of gratitude, with many praising Lado for his resilience during the difficult period of his detention.
Lado’s detention, which began on March 30, 2024, raised significant public outcry due to the lack of transparency surrounding the charges against him. He was accused of several serious crimes, including conspiracy against the government, supplying weapons to insurgents, and spreading false information detrimental to South Sudan. Despite these charges, his release has been widely welcomed by civil society groups and advocates of human rights.
As he reunited with his loved ones, Lado expressed his appreciation for the support he received from the public and various organizations that worked tirelessly for his release. The gathering, held at his family home, was a moment of relief and a symbolic victory for those advocating for justice and the rule of law in South Sudan.
The former mayor, known for his outspoken stance against land grabbing in and around Juba, is expected to address the public in the coming days, as his supporters continue to push for accountability and transparency in his case.
