JONGLEI, August 29, 2024 — Authorities in Twic East County, Jonglei State, have issued an urgent appeal for support as malaria cases spike in the region due to ongoing floods. The situation has overwhelmed local healthcare facilities, which are struggling with a shortage of essential medicines.
County Health Director Chol Leek Deng reported that Panyagoor County Hospital has been receiving over 100 malaria cases daily. The hospital is running low on supplies, with a recent consignment of Artesunate, an injectable malaria drug, nearly depleted. “During this season, malaria cases often go up and this year is no exception,” Deng said. “We had 286 to 300 cases of malaria in July alone, which has exhausted our drug supplies. We are appealing for intervention.”
Acting County Commissioner Elijah Manyok Ayiei echoed the health director’s concerns, describing the dire conditions at local health centers. “If you visit our health centers, people are suffering. There are no drugs while people are getting sick every day. We appeal for support,” Ayiei said.
The county officials are urging humanitarian organizations and government agencies to provide immediate assistance to avert a worsening health crisis in the flood-affected region.
