JUBA, Monday (August 26, 2024) – Today, H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit traveled to Nairobi, Kenya at the invitation of President William Ruto. He was invited to attend the launch of Raila Amollo Odinga as Kenya’s candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Before departing from Juba International Airport, the Presidential Press Secretary, Lily Adhieu Martin Manyiel, spoke to the media and stated that President Kiir, as the Chairperson of the East African Community, would collaborate with partner states to support the right candidate representing the regional bloc.
On Tuesday, President Ruto will officially introduce the former Prime Minister as Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. This move serves as the official endorsement of his campaigns throughout the continent in preparation for the February 2025 elections.
While in Nairobi, President Kiir will receive comprehensive updates on the progress of the ongoing Tumaini peace initiative between the government and hold-out groups. The First Vice President, Riek Machar, saw the President off.
