JUBA, Aug. 19, 2024 — South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has dismissed his presidential affairs minister, Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro, less than a year after his appointment. The decision was announced in a presidential decree broadcast on state television Monday night. No reason was provided for Bakosoro’s sudden dismissal.
Bakosoro, a prominent politician from Western Equatoria State, was a close ally of President Kiir and had previously served as the minister of public service in the transitional government. He rejoined the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) on July 15, 2021, after leaving his own South Sudan Movement for Change (SSMC) Party, which was part of the transitional government of national unity.
In a separate decree, Kiir appointed Chol Mawut Ungwech Ajongo, who was serving as South Sudan’s Ambassador to Kenya, as the new presidential affairs minister. Additionally, Kiir named Hellen Kamisa Bero and Riak Michael Mario to replace the late Agnes Kwaje Lasuba and Michael Mario Duor as members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly.
The reshuffle comes amid ongoing political adjustments within South Sudan’s government as it navigates the complex landscape of national unity and peacebuilding efforts.
