JUBA, Aug. 16, 2024 — A war veteran, Chol Marial, and over 400 residents have been forcefully evicted from their homes in Juba as part of a controversial action ordered by Bol Mel and executed by Adhel Mel. The eviction, carried out by nearly 200 soldiers in 20 vehicles, resulted in the destruction of more than 45 rooms, leaving many Junubiin residents homeless.
The compound, where Marial resided and rented out rooms to support himself, was razed by bulldozers following the order. Marial, who is disabled, had been granted temporary permission by Kuol Gabelwula, a friend of Adhaari, to stay in the compound until an ongoing legal dispute between Adhaari, Tomas Chirilo, and Bol Mel is resolved.
According to sources close to the situation, Kuol had assured Marial that if Adhaari and Kuol were to win the case, they would provide Marial with financial assistance to start a new life elsewhere. Meanwhile, Marial had been sustaining himself by renting out rooms in the compound, offering affordable housing to other residents.
The sudden eviction has left the affected residents in a state of shock and despair, with many expressing frustration over the loss of their homes and belongings. The court case between the three parties remains unresolved, further complicating the situation for those involved.
The destruction of the compound has intensified the suffering of the Junubiin community, as the already vulnerable population now faces an uncertain future without shelter or support. The incident highlights ongoing tensions and disputes over land ownership and housing rights in Juba.
As the legal battle continues, the displaced residents and Marial are left waiting for justice and the possibility of rebuilding their lives after the devastating eviction.
