AWIEL, South Sudan, August 9, 2024—Authorities in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State closed nine hotels and lodges in Aweil East County this week, citing their promotion of prostitution, poor structural standards, and illegal operations. The closures, following a security committee meeting, targeted establishments in Wanyjok’s main market and residential area.
Aweil East County Commissioner Diing Aher Ngong confirmed the action, stating that the establishments were involved in promoting sexual immorality, including the exploitation of minors, which violates Dinka Malual customs. Ngong also pointed out that the hotels, built with grass structures, posed fire hazards, ordering owners to reconstruct with concrete if they wish to resume operations.
Community reactions were mixed, with some residents arguing that the hotels were necessary for travelers. However, local activist Angelina Agau Thiep supported the closures, asserting that the hotels contributed to social decay. The South Sudanese constitution and the Child Act of 2008 protect minors from sexual exploitation, defining a child as anyone under 18 years old.
