ELDORET, Kenya, July 30, 2024 A delegation of bishops from the internal province of Bor visited Eldoret, Kenya, to address local South Sudanese Christians amid rising tensions within the church. The delegation, led by Archbishop Reuben Akurdid Ngong of Jonglei state, included Bishop Peter Mayom of Malek diocese, Bishop James Deng Aker of Makuach diocese, Bishop David Achiek Mach of Anyidi diocese, and Bishop July Ngong of Kolmarek diocese.
The visiting bishops urged the faithful to maintain their allegiance to the Bor internal province as church politics intensify. This call comes amid a growing conflict between Archbishop Ngong and Bishop Moses Anur, which has caused divisions within the greater Bor community, particularly between the Athooch and Jur Gok clans.
Last Sunday, the bishops’ presence at the local Sunday mass prompted many congregants to leave in protest when the bishops began discussing disunity among Christians.
The South Sudanese Christian community in Eldoret, which has worshipped together since 2003, is now facing division along clan lines, exacerbated by the rivalries among their church leaders.
