DATELINE: JUBA, South Sudan, July 29, 2024 Veteran journalist Garang John extended his congratulations to his former wife, Leki, following her recent marriage to Gino Aliong. This announcement comes after their silent divorce was finalized amid challenging circumstances.
In a poignant entry from his prison diary, John recounts the struggle his elders faced to gain access to him at the National Security Jail. On March 7, 2023, armed guards escorted him, chained, from the prison to the Blue House’s main building, where he met his elders for a brief five minutes. During this meeting, they informed him of the court case filed by Leki for divorce. Despite his attempts to reconcile through traditional elder mediation and church intervention, the divorce proceeded due to irreconcilable differences.
Released from detention a few days later, John faced the divorce hearing and requested the court to allow elders to resolve the issue outside the legal framework. Despite these efforts, the marriage ended, and John acknowledged his failings in marriage communication.
John reflected on his time with Leki, emphasizing her qualities and accomplishments. He described her as well-educated, hardworking, and dedicated, noting her significant position as a consultant for the United Nations. John admitted that the breakdown of their marriage was due to his neglect and failure to address family matters seriously.
After his release, John’s health deteriorated, prompting him to leave South Sudan for safety and medical care. Despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude for his survival and growth from the experience.
