JUBA, South Sudan, July 24, 2024 — President Salva Kiir Mayardit has embarked on a working visit to South Africa, where he will meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa for a bilateral meeting. The visit aims to brief President Ramaphosa on the progress of the ongoing Nairobi Tumaini peace initiative, which seeks a political settlement between the government of South Sudan and holdout groups.
Press Secretary Lily Adhieu Martin highlighted the strong working relationship between South Africa and South Sudan, dating back to the liberation struggle. South Africa’s role as a member of the C5, a group of guarantors of the South Sudanese peace agreement, underscores the importance of the meeting between the two leaders.
The discussions between President Kiir and President Ramaphosa are expected to focus on advancing peace and stability in South Sudan, as well as strengthening the ties between the two nations.
