As the controversial finance bill entered its second reading, Gen Z youth flooded into Eldoret town, causing anger among many young people across the country. In Eldoret town, a building was the scene of a shooting in which 35 people were injured, including a 16-year-old boy. Both of the injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at Moi and Teaching and Referral hospitals in Eldoret.
Thousands of young people have barricaded Eldoret town, which some protesters describe as the “bedroom” of sitting President William Ruto, demanding that he step down.
During the protests, the youth invaded the public library in Eldoret and set three vehicles on fire inside the building. Eldoret is a major highway connecting Kenya with neighboring countries Uganda, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.
In the same protests, Gen Z youth overran the Usain Gishu headquarters and it took over 3 hours to remove them from the building. Some places and businesses owned by Kenyan politicians were also set on fire.
Businesses throughout Eldoret have come to a standstill as Gen Z youth have taken control of all the streets. The police have attempted to intervene but have ended up in conflict with the youth.
Timba Pub, which belongs to the outspoken politician Oscar Sudi, has been destroyed and looted. Valuable property and alcohol were stolen, leading to confrontations between the police and Gen Z youth. Sources have informed the media that three people were fatally shot inside Timba Pub.
