Upper Nile State In a passionate plea to the ruling party, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), concerned citizen Karbino Awad Pieka has urged the government to address regional disparities and political marginalization against the Mabaan community in Upper Nile State.
Speaking to The Juba Mirror, Karbino emphasized the need for equitable representation and recognition of the Mabaan community within the political landscape of the state.
According to Karbino, despite being staunch supporters of the SPLM, the Mabaan community faces exclusion from positions of power and influence, leading to feelings of disenfranchisement among its members. State Secretary of the SPLM, Gabriel Tut Gatchai, acknowledged the overwhelming support shown by the Mabaan community for the party, raising concerns about the party’s commitment to fair representation.
Highlighting the significant numerical strength of the Mabaan community in Upper Nile State, Karbino underscored the importance of acknowledging and rectifying the injustices faced by the community. He emphasized that prioritizing certain interests over others not only undermines democracy but also weakens the unity and cohesion of the SPLM.
Quoting the late leader Dr. John Garang De Mabior, Karbino stressed the importance of not viewing any community as a majority or minority, calling for inclusive governance practices within the SPLM.
He pointed out that since the reversion to 10 states, the Mabaan community has been overlooked for key positions, leading to a sense of ownership of the party by other communities in Upper Nile State.
Karbino urged the SPLM leadership to listen to the voices of the Mabaan community and take steps to address their grievances.
Upholding principles of fairness, inclusivity, and respect for all communities is essential for the credibility and effectiveness of the SPLM in South Sudan, he stated. It is time for the SPLM to demonstrate its commitment to these principles by ensuring the rightful recognition and representation of the Mabaan community in the governance structures of Upper Nile State.
