January 17, 2024 At least five people were killed and seven others wounded in an armed youth clash in Mayom County, Unity State.
Speaking to The City Review on Wednesday, ex-Joknyang Declaration Faction spokesperson Maj. Sacristan Zoal said the incident happened on Tuesday when two youth groups clashed in Nyagarang cattle camp in Wangkei Payam.
He said the fighting was triggered by the impregnation of a lady by one of the youth in the camp.
“These armed youth fought yesterday [Tuesday] in the afternoon in Darkuer Nyagarang cattle camp because of the girl who was impregnated by a man from Chiebjiek. And because the brothers of the girl knew the man, they went and attacked them,” Zoal said.
He added, “When the man saw the brothers of the girl with his clansmen moving with guns toward them, they were ready but remained stationary without making any step. But because the brothers of the lady were angry, they started shooting at the man and the man with his cousins also fought back,” he said.
He added that the incident led to the death of five men including one of the brothers of the lady while seven others were seriously injured.
However, Maj. Zoal confirmed that forces were dispatched to Nyagarang cattle camp on Tuesday and the armed youth fled the area, leaving behind only girls and children in the camp.
“We heard the information the same day yesterday and Maj. Gen. Tito Biel sent forces to the cattle camp but they were not found. They ran to the neighboring areas within Wangkei,” he stressed.
