South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, said in a meeting with Mr. Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and head of UNMISS, in Juba to discuss the upcoming general elections earlier today that the country isn’t ready for elections.
Dr. Machar emphasized the importance of fulfilling prerequisites for fair, free, and credible elections, including the full implementation of security arrangements, repatriation of refugees, conducting censuses, establishing a permanent constitution, and availing funds for election-related activities. He expressed readiness for elections but stated that the country is not yet prepared for it.
Mr. Haysom commended Dr. Machar’s commitment to the peace agreement and assured UNMISS’ support in creating a conducive environment for free and fair elections. The meeting also addressed the humanitarian situation of Sudanese refugees, with Dr. Machar expressing commitment to working with UNMISS and other actors to provide necessary aid and support.
