A watchman at the Lakes State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) compound in Rumbek shot and killed the chairperson of the state RRC, Hon. Dut Malual Chahoc, and a prison police captain on Friday evening.
The watchman was also killed in the exchange of fire with security forces, according to a security source who said the incident happened at around 8:00PM on Friday.
“A watchman at the RRC compound in Rumbek opened fire on the chairperson of the state RRC, Hon. Dut Malual Chahoc, killing him and one other person on spot before being himself killed,” the source said.
“He was killed when he exchanged fire with security forces because he was resisting arrest and as a result he was shot.
“The other person who was killed along with the chairperson of RRC is a prison police captain,” the source added.
The Lakes State information minister, who is currently in Uganda, confirmed the incident but declined to give more information.
For his part, a senior SPLM-IO official said that the suspended RRC deputy head Adhum Achol was arrested for investigation over the matter.
“The deputy chairperson of RRC Adhum Achol has been arrested,” he said.
“He was suspended and then he moved away from the compound and many others have also been arrested on the direct orders of Governor Rin Tueny Mabor,” he said.
He said all people who were living in the RRC compound were arrested, but Adhum was not living there because he had been suspended and moved to live at a family home in Rumbek.
The motive for the shooting is still unclear, but the incident has raised concerns about security in Lakes State which has been plagued by violence in recent years.
